January 2023 marks a special time in the history of the United States of America, as it commemorates the abolition of slavery by President Abraham Lincoln. As we take this time to remember the inhumane and unjust practice of slavery, it is important to also recognize that the fight against slavery still continues today under a different name. Human Trafficking Prevention Month serves as an important reminder that slavery still exists in our world, and that we must continue to work together if we want to see it come to an end. January provides an opportunity to raise awareness and provide education on the dangers of modern day slavery and how to combat it.

January 2023 marks a significant milestone for the United States as it marks the 158th anniversary of the Emancipation Proclamation, a document issued by President Abraham Lincoln that declared the end of slavery in the United States. To commemorate the occasion, in 2010, President Obama declared that January would officially become Human Trafficking Prevention month. At Even4one, we are proud to stand in solidarity with the many organizations, individuals, and activists that are working every day to fight against modern day slavery. Human trafficking is a global problem that transcends borders, race, culture, gender, and all socioeconomic backgrounds. True understanding of the problem as well as collaboration from people in all walks of life are the only ways to see and end to this global pandemic.

Human Trafficking is the recruitment, transportation, harboring and/or exercising control, direction or influence over the movements of a person in order to exploit that person, typically through sexual exploitation or forced labor. Human trafficking is a heinous crime that exploits the most vulnerable in society. It’s important to remember that slavery did not end with the Emancipation Proclamation. Human trafficking is a modern-day form of slavery and it still thrives in the United States of America today. According to the US State Department, human trafficking is a crime that generates billions of dollars for criminals who exploit vulnerable people for their own profit.

At Even4one, we are committed to helping fight human trafficking through acute advocacy in the referral process, and our goal is to connect survivors of trafficking to the best resources for them in a timely manner. We are working to raise awareness about this issue and to support those organizations that are working to eradicate it.
